[ Training Programs ][Grants]
With regret we announce that our grants program has terminated, the downturn of the global economy having affected our funding sources. Should we reopen the program, we assure you we will disseminate the announcement. Meanwhile, our annual training programs continue:
Asian Emporiums Course. Designed for undergraduate students in the social sciences and humanities who are enrolled in universities in Southeast Asia, Asian Emporiums is a 48-hour, three-credit course that introduces Southeast Asian cultures, politics and societies. The course is offered every summer (April-May) and rotates among universities in the region. The University of Indonesia is offering the course this year.
Advanced Seminar on Southeast Asian Studies. The seminar is for MA and PhD students and junior researchers and university teachers in the field of Southeast Asian studies. In collaboration with KISEAS (Korean Institute of Southeast Asian Studies), this five-day seminar offers intensive lectures and in-depth discussions on various aspects of a selected Southeast Asian country. This year’s seminar will focus on Indonesia and will be held on 3-7 August 2009 at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), Jakarta, Indonesia.
Workshop on Alternative Research Methodologies. The two-week workshop is for PhD students from the South in the field of social sciences, who have a particular interest in the history of development. Applicants must be at the early dissertation stage, in the process of formulating their dissertation proposals, and are registered in universities in the South. Supported by Sephis, a South-South exchange program supported by the Netherlands Ministry of Cooperation, the workshop aims to provide students an opportunity to strengthen the theoretical and methodological quality of their work under the guidance of experienced researchers from the South. Assigned from lectures and discussions relating to selected research methods, individual tutorials are held on the participants’ research proposals to enable the participants to redesign or improve their research project. This workshop takes place in the Philippines in October of each year. This year the workshop will focus on rereading the archives and on orality and oral techniques.
In addition, a new activity is being launched this year, called the Policy Dialogue. The activity brings together academics and policy makers, the private sector, and interested members of the public, to discuss a policy concern and consider policy alternatives and measures that can be taken to address the issue under discussion. Expertise of resource persons from the South will be tapped. The first dialogue will be held at the University of the Philippines on 28 August 2009. Led by the Department of History, the dialogue will examine social studies textbooks in elementary and secondary education. The Policy Dialogue is supported by Sephis.
