The Japan Foundation was established in 1972 for the purpose of
promoting mutual understanding and friendship on the international
scene. The Japan Foundation Asia Center was established in October
1995 as one of the divisions of the Foundation for the purpose of (1)
promoting mutual understanding through dialogue and exchange in
various levels of society in the Asian region; and (2) to encourage
international collaboration in coping with common problems in the
region.
The Asia Center carries out programs for the promotion of
intellectual exchange in Asia and for the promotion of understanding
of Asia in Japan. The Asia Center can initiate projects of its own or
collaborate in the planning, implementation and administration of
projects with other governmental or non-governmental organizations,
both within and outside Japan. Finally, the Asia Center can provide
funds in support of projects that are proposed by organization in
Asian countries in an open grants competition.
