The University motto, Ilmu Punca Kemajuan (Knowledge is the key to success) reflects the philosophy of UM, constantly striving for knowledge in all fields to produce successful graduates and a successful nation. The University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur was established in 1 January 1962.

Today with over 2,000 full-time faculty, 2,500 staff, 11 faculties, 2 academies and 4 centers, the University of Malaya is the largest university in Malaysia with a commitment to the pursuit of excellence.

The academic year begins on the first day of July and ends on the last day of June the next year. The year is divided into two semesters.
