SEPHIS is an independent programme for research on the history of development. The programme is sponsored by the Netherlands Ministry for Development Cooperation which provides logistical and administrative support through the International Institute of Social History (IISH) in Amsterdam. The SEPHIS Steering Committee consists of ten historians and social scientists, of whom the majority is based in the South.
The programme's objective is to create a South-South network on comparative historically oriented research on a broad range of topics within the themes of identity and equity. Every year, SEPHIS awards Ph.D. and postdoctoral grants as well as grants for workshops, and lecture tours in open competition. The programme started in 1994.
