A third model of ASEAN Studies can be seen in the International Masters of ASEAN Studies of the University of Malaya’s Asia-Europe Institute, which delineates between the concepts ‘ASEAN’ and ‘Southeast Asia’. The program is oriented toward the ASEAN, aiming to “give students an in-depth understanding of the political security, economic and socio-cultural issues of the ASEAN region as well as to expose the students to the policy-making processes in relevant fields relating to ASEAN” (https://aei.um.edu.my/master-in-asean-studies-mas#), with the additional objective of comparing the ASEAN with its earlier counterpart, the European Union. The program also includes a course about Southeast Asia—The Making of Modern Southeast Asia—which does not describe the region as ASEAN (as the consortium program would) but rightly as Southeast Asia.
